Murder convictions are a tough call....

So, I just started this blog and I already have something on my mind (per usual).
I'm a writer for a great weekly newspaper called The Enterprise and I got talking to my editor today about murder stories that the paper had covered over the recent years. There hasn't been many since 2000, maybe five or six. I was really intrigued about this one murder that took place back in Oct. 2004. It was about this senior at the University of Albany that was convicted of beating the shit out of this guy with a blunt object. His name was Erick Westervelt and he was accused of murdering a man named Tim Gray.
However, there's always a catch.
Westervelt claims that he didn't do it and that he was "tricked" by police because Gray had started dating his former girlfriend, Jess Domery. After reading all the stories about it, the case seemed like a battle of he said, she said, bullshit. You have the cops saying one thing and Westervelt and his family saying the opposite. I guess that's just how trials go.
But, the crazy thing, Westervelt's DNA was never found on the scene and Gray's DNA was never found on Westervelt. It had me scratching my head a little. Another wild thing, Gray was laying in his own blood for about 12 hours before his neighbor found him on the brink of death. He died like four days later.
It really sucks for Westervelt if he actually is innocent because he's serving 25 to life. Plenty of people have been found innocent after serving some time for a crime they did not commit. It was just easy for police to convict Westervelt because he's the "jealous ex-boyfriend."
I kind of believe Westervelt. I don't know him, but should I help him??
